There are definitely times we all need to feel "boundary-free".
To escape our imaginary shackles. However, these everyday
obstacles, whether in the form of limited instruments, the edge of
a canvas, or a model creative brief, are almost always the key to
igniting admirable creative. Creative that is brilliant because of
these boundaries rather than in spite of them. Many of us imagine
creativity existing only in an environment of boundless
possibilities, with no restrictions, and no rules, but it is these
boundaries that provide the discipline creativity needs to truly
flourish. In our world of client-agency relationships, this is
almost always only visible with hindsight. Blinding us from the
realization that there can be more liberty in discipline than
constraint.
We all crave the creative brief with more information than the
last. One that gives us the enlightenment needed to siphon the
"best idea ever" from the deepest, blackest, crevasse of our
turtleneck-strangled brains. These always include deadlines and
restrictions that we tend to feel are road blocks to the creative
process, and interrupts how great we could have been. Accept these
challenges the same way a good improv performer would into their
act, as the absence of constraints, where outside contributions
leave little opportunity for greatness.
